FDA is all set to give approval to GMO (genetically modified) salmon

Natural News reports that the FDA is on its way to giving approval to the sale of genetically engineered fish considering it safe for human consumption. The GE salmon that the FDA has given approval to grows twice as fast as the normal Atlantic salmon as they are genetically modified. It is only a matter of time before GM fish is served in restaurants throughout the U.S. However, the FDA has decided to accept suggestions from the public for 60 days before finally executing their plans but critics are of the opinion that this is only a gimmick.

 

The modification of salmon has been made possible by AquaBounty Technologies or ABT, a company in Prince Edward Island near Boston. ABT is a small biotechnology firm that is working to leverage the yield from aquaculture. It has already made a place for itself in the field of biotechnology by engineering fast growing species of salmon, trout and tilapia. The new breed of salmon developed by them has already been named as AquAdvantage Salmon. Natutal News reports that the FDA has already announced that this new genetically modified salmon is safe for consumption and will not pose any risk to the health of the consumers.

With the FDA making plans to feed the general public with this genetically modified variety of salmon, critics are raising their concern about the safety of the consumers.  Michael Hansen who is a researcher at the Consumers Union is of the opinion that this new variety of genetically engineered fish could cause allergic reactions to many. Food & Water Watch director Wenonah Hauter suggests that consumers should contact their respective congressmen and register their complaints against the commercialization of such a dangerous food. Andrew Kimbrell of Center for Food Safety also opines that the genetically modified salmon are not only bad for health but also bad for the environment and the entire salmon industry.
